Stomach flu is not really a serious condition because it is merely a case of an upset stomach caused by a virus and because it is known to pass away 1-2 day’s time. However, its symptoms are very annoying and it could become very alarming if you just turn a deaf ear to them. First, pain is felt in the stomach and even though this will pass away, the pain is sometimes excruciating. Second, diarrhea is also one of the symptoms that could lead to complications like dehydration, weakness and even death, so it’s not something you should just ignore.
Plus, not all stomach flu viruses that attack last only for 1-2 days. Other stomach flu viruses last up to 10 days, depending on the strength of your immune system. Therefore, you can’t be sure how long you’ll have to endure the symptoms as well as you can’t just sit and wait for them to pass just because stomach flu is not a serious condition.
But how can you cure stomach flu?
The cure for stomach flu is not actually a definite or direct cure for the virus. Rather, it is more on relieving the symptoms because they are the ones that could lead to complications. Your body has a defense called the immune system so it is already fighting the virus. The battle just does not end quickly. The trick here is to simply reduce the symptoms so that no further complications can arise from them.
Fast for a few hours
When you have stomach flu, your stomach is not functioning very well. In other words, it has been breached by the virus so it is deemed out of order. If you stuff it with food, it could worsen the symptoms because your stomach is not yet ready to digest anything. With this, it is best to just allow your stomach to be empty for a few hours while it is still adjusting.
Drink and Rehydrate
Diarrhea can cause dehydration and severe dehydration could lead to worst conditions. This is why you need to make sure that dehydration is prevented by drinking lots of fluid to replenish the lost fluids in your body brought by diarrhea and vomiting. It is also best to take oral hydration salts for the maintenance of electrolyte balance in your body.
Avoid certain foods
You can start eating food already to regain your strength but make sure that the food you eat is the right food to take when you have stomach flu. You can start with a banana, an apple, rice and other bland foods while avoiding dairy products like milk, butter, or foods that have these items as ingredients. Avoid other beverages as well that contain alcohol and caffeine.
Take a medication for vomiting
Vomiting is another symptom of stomach flu and aside from weakening your body, this symptom is also annoying. Even if you start eating if you are just going to puke it out, your body can still weaken. With this, there are medications sold in pharmacies that can help you stop vomiting spells. You can ask your doctor about it so they can prescribe you the right medication.
Get enough rest
Just like when you have the influenza virus, you also need complete rest when you have the stomach flu virus. Rest not only helps keep away stress from your body but it also prevents you from losing more fluids through sweating.
It is not difficult to cure stomach flu symptoms as long as you are disciplined and really determined to get well soon.
